A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

pan-, pano-; pant-, panto-: in Gk. comp. 'all, every' = Latin omnis,-e (adj.B), q.v.

[> Gk. pas, pasa, pan; gen. sg. pantos, pasEs, pantos: (in the plural) all; all, the whole, entire, the entire amount of; of each of a number, 'every'; ‘all, when used of many; when of one only, ‘all, the whole’’ (Liddell & Scott); all, the whole];

The prefix pan- or pano- in Gk. compounds = Gk., from ‘pan,’ neuter of pas, ‘all, every; completely.’

Panax,-acis (s.m.III), q.v., abl.sg. Panace Linn. From [Gk.] pan, all, and akos, a remedy; in allusion to the miraculous virtues ascribed to P. quinguefolius, Linn. Araliaceae (Paxton); “name from the Greek ‘pas,’ ‘all,’ and akos, ‘cure,’ that is ‘all healing,’ a panacea, from the repute of the plants in China” (Fernald 1950); see panacea,-ae (s.f.I).

- panaposporia,-ae (s.f.I): “the condition of prothalli being developed aposporously over the entire surface of the frond” (Jackson) [> Gk. Pas, gen.sgt. pantos, ‘all = aposporia’].

- pangenesis,-is (s.f.III), abl.sg. pangenese: pangenesis, “a theory that each separate unit of a body throws off minute gemmules during all stages of development, which may develop it once, or remain dormant and be transmitted through the reproductive cells to later generations” (Jackson) [> Gk. pas, gen.sg. pantos, ‘all,’ + genesis, beginning].

- panmixia,-ae (s.f.I), “Weismann’s term to denote the agency of modification or evolution which results from the cessation of natural selection” (Jackson) [> Gk. pas, gen.sg. pantos, ‘all’ + mixia, a mixing].

- panteumorphus,-a,-um (adj.A): “altogether beautiful” (Stearn 1996) > pant-, ‘all’ + eu, ‘well’ + morphus, ‘shape, structure,’ altogether perfectly-shaped, completely beautiful.

- pantogenus,-a,-um (adj.A): pantogenous, “applied to Fungi which grow everywhere, and are not confined to a single host” (Jackson) [> Gk. pas, gen.sg. pantos, ‘all,’ + genos, race, offspring].

NOTE: panta, as adv., in all points, entirely, wholly; but ta panta, in every way, by all means, altogether; neut. sg. (to) pan (s.n.II), the whole, one’s all; cf. ‘per omnia’ or just ‘omnia,’ with adverbial force, ‘in all respects, throughout.”

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
